The Core

  • Meet the doulas who work alongside Elizabeth to create the beating heart of Looma Birth

  • Meet Sarah

Growing up I never pictured myself working in the birth field. I studied Psychology in college with a plan to be a Marriage and Family Therapist. Now, I have goals to further my education in postpartum counseling and to become a certified birth educator.

Once I started having kids my whole identity seemed to change along with my passions. I have three children whose births have led me to become a doula. Throughout my own pregnancies and births I have had amazing support teams and realize that those people made a huge difference in how I went into my labors and beyond. After I had my second child at home in 2020, I began the process of training to become a doula through DONA International and completed that in January of 2021. I believe all mothers should have access to kind, attentive and knowledgeable support throughout their pregnancies and birth. My goal as a doula is to empower mamas to feel confident and educated so they can go into labor not fearing the process. My favorite birth quote by Anna Wilde is, “Approach birth as an opportunity to have an adventure on the way to meeting your baby, rather than an ordeal to be endured.” I truly believe that birth is intuitive and we can listen to and trust our bodies.

My favorite tool I bring to births is a heating pad. I know that heat can be so relieving for some and so I always have one with me. I also consider myself more of a minimalist doula and believe that a calming presence alone can be so helpful to laboring women.

During my free time I enjoy reading fiction novels, taking long walks with my kids or having goofy dance parties around the house!

  • Meet Jessica

As a child, I always wanted to “deliver babies” when I grew up. I babysat throughout college and was even a nanny for a while. My undergraduate studies were in Kinesiology with the intention to become a pediatric physical therapist. I didn’t get into graduate school during my first round of applications so I started working in a corporate office but I got used to the paycheck and didn’t want to go back to being a full time student again. Although, it was always in me to obtain a higher degree, so I completed my Master’s degree in Business Administration. Little did I know, I would later end up using it to start my own business.

I met my now husband and became a step mom, we got married and then I had a beautiful, unmedicated birth at a birth center. I knew immediately that I wanted to be in the birth world. My birth was everything I had imagined but the months after completely ROCKED me (hello, postpartum anxiety). I went back to work from my maternity leave for 2 days and quit my full time corporate job. I told my husband I would figure it out….

I took a doula training course and now here I am, still figuring it out! I enrolled in Elizabeth’s mentorship as a brand new doula and learned so much from her about how to grow my doula business. Although the course was only three months, she’s been my mentor and someone I’ve looked up to ever since! I have had another beautiful birth since then and have added a few trainings to my resume; Bengkung belly binding, yoni steaming, and baby wearing, just to name a few. When the opportunity to bring these expertise to the Looma team came up, it was an absolute yes!

  • Meet Aubrey

When I started college, I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse. I was drawn to the birth work after working in my Mom’s daycare and being around the pregnant mamas coming and going. I am also the baby of 5 and my older siblings were starting to have their own children (yay Auntie-hood). I always wanted to know all the details – how are you feeling – how was delivering – what was it like.Life took a couple of turns and I ended up taking over my Mom’s daycare. My curiosity for birth and babies took a back seat while I was settling into running my own business, dating, and getting married. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I really started my own research and just fell into the books at that point. From the hospital class to reading Ina May, to nightless nights on pinterest and youtube, I was fascinating at the experience of birth. Anyone I could talk to, I would talk to about pregnancy, birth, and babies. Fast forward a second daughter (and meeting Elizabeth at Ra Yoga) – I found my calling as a doula. My doula work starting in 2019 with training and has been a constant ever since. I think of this journey of mamahood as lifechanging – you grow as a person as you become a new person. As your doula, I want to help educate you, empower you. I want to show you what you ARE capable of - without fear as part of the equation. I found throughout my own journey into mamahood that education and support were the key foundations to survival – something I want to help you find and cultivate. When I’m not working to support other new families, you can find me with my 3 beautiful kids and hubby at the bay, walking, or exploring Long Beach. A Long Beach Lifer, I love yoga, cooking, and reading.

  • Meet Brittany

My career has always revolved around children. I’ve worked as an elementary school teacher, teacher coach, and nanny. Each, in their own way, led me to my work as a lactation counselor and postpartum doula.

In January of 2023, I became a Certified Lactation Counselor and in June of 2023, I completed training with Doula Training International and became a certified postpartum doula. I was immediately fascinated by the amazing things our body does to feed our babies. Learning about lactation and supporting lactating parents became a passion of mine. Breast/chest feeding is natural, but that does not always mean it’s easy or straightforward. Having someone to answer questions, validate experiences, and help trouble shoot can make a world of difference!

On December 28 th , 2023, I became a mama myself! My own postpartum experience has made me even more committed to supporting others through this journey. It is a delicate and special time deserving of compassionate and non-judgmental care. Feeding my own baby has been a rollercoaster and I have been so grateful to all the people who have supported me through the doubt and the tears. Now I want to be there for others as they navigate feeding and caring for their babies. If I can help a mama feel calmer and more confident, then I have succeeded! Whether it’s changing your first diaper, giving your baby their first bath, or finding a comfortable way to feed your baby, I am there for you!
